3-year-old alerts police to Henry homicide

A three-year-old child alerted police to what turned out to be a murder scene Thursday afternoon in an exclusive Hampton subdivision.

Henry County police responded to a distress signal sent from an OnStar button a little after noon. Inside the vehicle at the Crystal Lake Country Club residence they found the unattended child.  Officers eventually gained entry into the home, located in the 300 block of Masters Club Boulevard, where they found the body of a woman in her mid-40s.

Police are not releasing the woman's identity, pending the notification of  kin, and are also withholding the cause of death. They have, however, ruled her death a homicide following an autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Neighbor Velma Harris said neither she nor her husband heard or saw anything strange as they went to work Thursday morning. They returned home to find their street crawling with police.

The occupant of the home had recently ended her marriage, Harris said. She also sometimes took care of her grandchildren, which might explain the toddler found in the vehicle.

Updates to come.
