The Department of Defense confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that a soldier from Georgia has died while serving overseas.

Spc. Joshua J. Strickland, 23, of Woodstock, was killed Sept. 21 when enemy forces attacked their unit with small arms fire while conducting range training in Gardez, Paktia Province, Afghanistan.

Strickland was assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group in Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

Strickland is survived by his wife, his son and two daughters.

Strickland was one of three soldiers killed in the attack.
