The Woodstock City Council has given first reading to an ordinance allowing earlier alcohol sales on Sundays – as permitted under Senate Bill 17, the so called “brunch bill” passed this spring by the Georgia General Assembly.

But even if formally approved by the council at its second reading July 9, the ordinance cannot take effect until residents vote to approve it in a November referendum.

Woodstock’s alcohol code currently allows alcoholic beverages to be sold in restaurants from 12:30 p.m. to midnight Sundays. The revised ordinance changes the hours of serving to 11 a.m. to midnight Sundays.

The measure would apply to any licensed establishment that derives at least 50 percent of its total gross sales from the sale of prepared meals or foods, or at least 50 percent of its total annual gross income from the rental of rooms for overnight lodging.
