An 87-year-old woman who was shot in the head during a home invasion Friday morning remained in critical condition Saturday as Atlanta police looked for her attackers.

The woman has been identified as Evelyn Atwater, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Police officers were dispatched to a home invasion in the 1800 block of Campbelltown Road around 7:30 a.m. and observed a woman with a head injury. Officers initially believed the victim was struck with an object, but after medical evaluations determined she had been shot once in the head.

"When I got off the bus around 4 o'clock, they said my mother had been shot and my heart just fell," son Anthony Atwater told Channel 2. "I mean, this is the sweetest lady in the entire universe. Why would anybody want to hurt her?"

The case remains under investigation. Police do not have a description of a possible suspect.
