Gwinnett County fire officials are investigating a suspicious fire near Snellville that caused minor damage to a mostly-vacant apartment building.

Only one unit of the apartment building in the 2800 block of Spruce Circle was occupied, and that unit was where the predawn fire started, according to Gwinnett fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge.

Rutledge told the AJC that the fire, which was quickly doused, was contained to one room of the second-floor apartment.

“There is a woman who is believed to be the occupant of the apartment, and she is in the back of a patrol car being questioned by police officers and fire investigators,” he said.

Rutledge said the cause of the fire had not been determined at 7:30 a.m.

“Circumstances do appear to be suspicious, but it has not been labeled an act of arson at this point,” Rutledge said.
