The fire that killed a 42-year-old Paulding County woman started in the kitchen, investigators told the AJC Tuesday.

Catherine Hunt died in the fire that destroyed two homes Monday afternoon.

The fire began in a split-level home off Ga. 61 and quickly spread to the house next door due to windy conditions, Mary Ann Phipps, spokeswoman for the Paulding County fire department, told the AJC. Three Paulding County fire stations responded to the blaze and a crew from Douglas County assisted, Phipps said.

Hunt's body was found inside one of the homes on Ivy Crest Drive, Phipps said. The neighborhood is located off Ga. 61, near U.S. 278, and is across from Paulding County High School.

Jamie Brown told the AJC she saw the smoke and arrived home to find her home destroyed by the fire.

"I saw the smoke coming home and made a joke to myself I hope that's not my home," Brown said.

The fire had started in the home next door and spread to Brown's home, investigators said.
