Atlanta police are investigating the death of a woman who apparently jumped from a room on the 11th floor of Grady Memorial Hospital early Tuesday.

Police spokeswoman Kim Jones told the AJC that officers responding to the downtown hospital around 3:15 a.m. found the woman lying on the pavement deceased, directly beneath an open 11th floor window.

Jones said investigators determined that no one else was in the room with the woman, and there was "no apparent foul play."

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's office identified the woman as Gloria Shavers, 60, of Atlanta.

Channel 2 Action News reported that she being treated for seizures, and that the hospital's windows are not supposed to open. Shavers was not on a suicide watch, the station reported.

Grady spokeswoman Denise Simpson released the following statement late Tuesday afternoon:

"All of us at Grady are deeply saddened by this morning’s tragic event and extend our heart-felt sympathies to the patient’s family.  We have been in touch with the family since the fall was reported and will continue to keep them apprised of the progress of our still active internal investigation.

"Windows in patient rooms are designed only to be opened by technicians for maintenance, repairs or other needs.  We are trying to determine exactly how the patient was able to get the window open.  We are working diligently to uncover all the circumstances that led up to this terrible accident."
