A 59-year-old woman survived being struck by lightning Monday night in Douglas County. But a family pet wasn't so lucky.
The woman, whose name was not released, was struck while standing near a tree on Heatherwood Court, near Chapel Hill Road, when powerful storms moved through the area, Wes Talon, county spokesman, told the AJC. The woman, alert and breathing after the strike, was transported to WellStar Douglas Hospital for treatment, Talon said.
About two miles away from where the woman was injured, a family pet died when a tree was struck by lightning, killing a nearby dog on the ground, Talon said. The dog was killed on Holland Drive, off Central Church Road.
Lightning also sparked a house fire on Landmark Drive in Douglas County. Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames in the attic of the home, but no one was injured.
More storms are expected to move through the metro area Tuesday evening, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist David Chandley.
