DeKalb County government offices will close Tuesday in anticipation of wintry weather.

DeKalb County announced it will close its government offices in anticipation of wintry weather expected across metro Atlanta on Tuesday.

Officials confirmed the closing at 5:30 p.m., more than an hour after the National Weather Service gave a 4 p.m. update on weather conditions. DeKalb senior centers, libraries and recreation centers will also be closed.

“County employees who are required to deal with the emergency conditions should report to work as normal,” officials said in an emailed statement.

Sanitation services for the county will be suspended on Tuesday. If weather conditions improve, collection services will resume Wednesday and will run one day late.

An arctic cold front is expected to move through North Georgia overnight, bringing a chance of wintry precipitation and up to 4 inches of snow in the highest elevations, Channel 2 Action News reported. Metro Atlanta could wake up to a wintry mix or even some snow Tuesday morning.

The DeKalb County School District closed all of its schools and facilities ahead of the threat “out of an abundance of caution,” according to a statement from district officials.

Other cities within the county, including Doraville and Dunwoody, also decided to close their government offices.

The DeKalb County Board of Health’s administrative offices and health centers will also be closed Tuesday, spokesman Eric Nickens told the AJC in an emailed statement.

Nickens said the board typically follows the lead of state government, but decisions about delayed openings or closures are ultimately made by the district health director. Georgia has 18 health districts.

“Ultimately, the safety of our clients and staff is our first priority,” Nickens said.

The DeKalb County Superior Court and the DeKalb Board of Equalization will also be closed.

The county has opened warming centers at the following locations in anticipation of severe weather.  The following centers will be opened from 7 a.m. Tuesday to noon Friday:

  • Fire Station 3 on 100 N. Clarendon Ave. in Avondale
  • Fire Station 6 on 2342 Flat Shoals Road in Atlanta
  • Fire Station 15 on 2107 Flightway Drive in  Chamblee
