Last-minute holiday shoppers will be juggling gifts in one hand and an umbrella in the other as rain is likely at any time on Christmas Eve.

The rain will persist through Christmas Day, and could be accompanied by a round of severe weather late Tuesday night, forecasters warned.

“A strong storm system will be developing over the lower Mississippi Valley Tuesday, bringing widespread rain and isolated to scattered thunderstorms to much of north and central Georgia Christmas Day through Wednesday morning,” the National Weather Service said in a statement early Monday.

The Weather Service said conditions Tuesday night and early Wednesday will be ripe for the development of isolated severe thunderstorms, mainly across western counties between 3 and 7 a.m. Wednesday, and across east Georgia between 7 a.m. and noon.

“At this time, the main concerns will be isolated tornadoes as well as strong damaging winds in excess of 60 mph,” the NWS statement said.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist David Chandley said the chance of rain is 100 percent Monday and Tuesday, tapering off to 70 percent on Wednesday.

Chandley is predicting highs in the upper 50s Monday, in the low 60s Tuesday and in the mid-50s Wednesday, with overnight lows in the upper 40s.

Colder weather is forecast by week’s end, with highs in the 40s and 50s and lows in the low 30s.
