The Cherokee county city of Waleska has hired a new city manager and clerk. The Waleska City Council Tuesday night picked Oma Lou Stewart to replace Aimee Abernathy, who resigned in October to take a government job in Bartow County.

Mayor Doris Jones said the council interviewed six candidates for the position and then narrowed the list to three finalists. She said Stewart was picked because of her lengthy government service background including more than 25 years with the city of Dahlonega, where she had served as an assistant city manager and clerk.

Jones said Stewart starts work Dec. 28.
