A police shooting protest in Union City ended badly Wednesday night, with vulgar graffiti spray painted on government buildings, a street sign damaged and a window broken out at the jail, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Family, friends and supporters held the protest to demand answers in the death of a 19-year-old fatally shot by a Union City police officer earlier this month.
Ariston Waiters was shot Dec. 14 after an altercation with an officer who was responding to call of a fight in progress on Hickory Lane, Union City police have said.
Waiters' mother was joined at the protest by activists from various civil rights groups, Channel 2 said.
"I am so hurt because my son was gunned down like an animal. He did not deserve that," Freda Waiters said in the report.
Ariston Waiters died from gunshot wounds to the back, the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office said.
The GBI is investigating the incident at the request of the Union City Police Department.
Union City leaders reportedly have not talked to the family, Channel 2 said.
"To the officer that did this, I do not hate you and I'm not angry," Freda Waiters said. "I love you like I love my son. I want justice for what's been done to my son."
The rally at Union City's City Hall ended with some protesters damaging property while marching to the public safety building and the regional jail. An American flag from the post office was torn down, the report said.
No one was arrested, Union City police said.
