Union City Housing Authority Board of Commissioners recently established Union City Housing Authority Development Inc., a nonprofit intended to increase the affordable housing offered to residents of the city.

With over 21,000 residents, Union City’s population has increased from 11,621 in 2000 to an estimated 21,189 in 2009, which represented an 82 percent increase.

The housing authority has supported the residents of Union City with tax-exempt bond issuance for community development, most recently a project consisting of 150 units of low-income senior housing. It is also responsible for maintaining the existing public housing in Union City.

The development corporation will focus on new construction and renovations, city officials said.
