Two weeks later, it remains unclear why a man who died after being hit by a MARTA train in DeKalb County was on the tracks.

Carl A. Shorter, 30, was in and out of consciousness near the Candler Park station when authorities arrived on Sept. 14, according to a MARTA report released Monday.

Around 7 a.m., a white sneaker lay on the tracks. About 100 feet away, Shorter was by the westbound line, which runs along DeKalb Avenue.

Shorter, whose address is listed on the report as "unknown," had shortness of breath, severe head trauma, numerous lacerations and appeared to have a broken arm.

The train operator was traveling toward the Inman Park station when he hit Shorter, the report said. It doesn't elaborate.

Alisa Jackson, communications manager for the transportation system, said Monday that MARTA police are still investigating.

"...that's all the info I have right now," Jackson told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
