University of Georgia officials announced Tuesday a pilot program to allow more undergraduate students to participate in research.

Officials in the college's Honors Program will work with engineering faculty members to develop information sessions, seminars and research courses aimed at students majoring in engineering. Faculty also will serve as mentors to students.

Ideally the partnership will serve as model that can be replicated with other academic departments, university officials said in a news release. The honors program includes a special center dedicated to finding and developing undergraduate research opportunities.

While it has long been common for graduate students to participate in research, many colleges have developed programs in the past few years to expand these opportunities to undergraduates.
