Three finalists to serve as the University of Georgia’s first dean for the College of Engineering will visit campus this month. The selection is a crucial step as the institution expands programs in this area.

Donald Leo, professor of mechanical engineering and vice president and executive director of the National Capital Region operations of Virginia Tech, will visit March 18.

Mark Law, professor of electrical and computer engineering and associate dean for academic affairs at the University of Florida College of Engineering will visit March 25.

Daniel Schwartz, Boeing-Sutter Professor and chair of the department of chemical engineering at the University of Washington College of Engineering will visit March 27.

UGA’s engineering expansion began in 2010 when the State Board of Regents narrowly approved its request to offer degrees in civil, electrical and mechanical engineering.

Lawmakers and others questioned the move saying the degrees are too similar to what’s offered at Georgia Tech. Others questioned expanding an expensive degree program while the state continues to struggle financially.

President Michael Adams and others countered that programs are needed to meet student demand and address a shortage of engineers.
