Backups of grease and debris are to blame for two separate raw sewage spills into Peachtree Creek in DeKalb County, according to water reports.

County water reports show about 3,000 gallons of sewage spilled in the 3400 block of Buford Highway in Atlanta on Wednesday. Another 4,320 gallons also spilled Wednesday in the 2000 block of Jordan Terrace in Atlanta.

Both spills were cleaned up within several hours, water officials said.

The county plans to start work on $1.35 billion in sewer and water system upgrades in June. The County Commission authorized the improvements after the federal Environmental Protection Agency issued a consent decree mandating improvements. The EPA cited more than 800 raw sewage spills in DeKalb in the five years.
