Two people were killed late Thursday morning when a plane crashed shortly after takeoff from the Athens airport have been identified.
According to reports, the victims are David S. Garber, 81, and Scott A. Strong, 47, both of Lady Lake, Fla.
The plane crashed about 11:20 a.m. a mile west-southwest of Athens Ben Epps Airport, said Kathleen Bergen, spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration.
Bergen said the airport had notified the FAA that the two people on board were killed.
The plane was a Fuji LM-1, built in 1957. Bergen described the plane as an "exhibition" aircraft such as would be seen in airshows. She said the plane was registered to Garber under an Athens address.
