There’s one more weekend of paving misery for northern Perimeter drivers this year, but it’s going to be a doozy.

The I-285 repaving project is scheduled to stall traffic on the northwest Perimeter this weekend for the last time before taking a winter break, according to the state Department of Transportation.

If you can, avoid it. Think of the long lines of weekend drivers and tractor-trailers, nearly motionless on the five-lane highway on sunny afternoons, that this project has produced. Add in some early holiday travelers, and massive lane closures.

Should you find yourself there all the same, here is something to mull while you brake:

WHAT

The Georgia Department of Transportation is repaving the northwestern section of I-285 between Paces Ferry Road in Cobb County and Ashford Dunwoody Road in DeKalb County.

WHEN

Construction is from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. The official completion date is August 2013. Paving takes a winter break because asphalt can’t properly set in cold weather. Rain stops work, but the forecast this weekend is sunny.

HOW MUCH

The project is expected to cost $56 million.

HOW BAD

This weekend’s potential jam is awful. Both eastbound and westbound. Closures of up to three lanes.

SORRY, BUT …

Ga. 400 south won’t be a great escape route. The project at Ga. 400 and I-85 is expected to jam things there.
