Decatur has installed an all-way stop at the 5th Avenue/Oakview Road intersection near the 4/5 Academy at Fifth Avenue. The purpose is to make the intersection safer for students, particularly during peak travel times 7-9 a.m. and 2-7 p.m. weekdays.

Later in the year students walk the area in darkness during some of those times.

A speed study did conclude the 85th percentile speed of vehicles traveling westbound on Oakview near the intersection was 30 mph, the posted limit. But the city concluded the all-way stop necessary because a median divides Oakview, and 5th Avenue doglegs (instead of cutting straight through) when crossing Oakview.

The stop signs, marked “new” with a tag underneath, were up in time for the opening of school this week.
