A freight train heading to Atlanta struck and killed a man Tuesday in Henry County, a Norfolk Southern spokesman said.

The victim was later identified as Keyvon Mathis, 19, of Griffin, by the Henry County coroner.

Mathis was sitting on the tracks when he was hit about 9:30 a.m. by the train, Norfolk Southern spokesman Richard W. Harris said.

The incident occurred in a remote area, about halfway between Jodeco Road and Ivey Edwards Lane, Harris said. The train, which had 74 cars, departed from Macon.

“It is illegal and obviously dangerous to trespass on railroad property,” Harris said. An investigation is underway, he said.
