Atlanta police have arrested three people in connection with the slaying of a man who was found dead in a car early Tuesday near Atlanta Medical Center.

Police say it was a setup, and that Barry Slaughter was killed for a wad of cash.

Police found Slaughter with a gunshot wound to the chest around 1 a.m. after responding to a report of a car crash, Maj. Keith Meadows of the Atlanta Police Department told the AJC Wednesday.

The Ford Taurus slammed into a utility pole in the 600 block of Ralph McGill Boulevard, but police determined Slaughter died from the gunshot wound.

Later Tuesday, police arrested two women in Doraville -- Alexis Wilkins, 19, and Sophia Ellison, 28 -- said Sgt. Curtis Davenport of the Atlanta police. And on Wednesday, police arrested Ecarlow Wilkins, 18. He was captured without incident in the 500 block of Windsor Street SW, Davenport said.

All three were taken to the Fulton County Jail and charged with murder.

Meadows said the three planned to rob him.

"It appears the victim had a large amount of cash on his person," Meadows said.

Wilkins and Slaughter had "had a pretty close relationship" and she apparently told her friends about the money, Meadows said.

Investigators got leads from the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line and worked through the night to link the trio to the killing, Meadows said. He said the robbery plans failed, and the three never took the cash.
