A construction company based in Athens has received top national honors for its green-based and energy-saving design of a custom-built home in Roswell.

The Department of Energy recently announced that Imery & Co. was the grand winner in this year's Housing Innovation Award for custom homes, beating out 13 other contractors nationwide in the category.

The 2,200-square-foot home features three bedrooms and 2.5 baths and was lauded by judges for its 6.3-kilowatt solar electric generation system. That system helped save the homeowners around $1,900 per year on electric bills — the bill averages $17 — compared to a similar-sized home built to code, said the DOE.

Other energy-saving features in the home were ENERGY STAR appliances, high-performance insulation, draft protection, and fresh air systems.

"We go beyond standard code requirements to build homes that will be compliant far into the future," said Luis Imery, founder of Imery & Co.

That system helped save the homeowners around $1,900 per year on electric bills.
