A flash flood warning was issued for Helen this week, causing several local roads to flood.

The mountain town, which is less than two hours north of Atlanta, saw upwards of 7 inches of rain Friday. But according to city officials, the river is inside its banks again and all roads within Helen reopened in the afternoon.
Helen is a riverside village on the Chattahoochee River with a population of about 542, according to the 2016 Census. It’s best known for its Bavarian-inspired architecture, Habersham Winery and Unicoi State Park in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
A quaint weekend in Helen may feature a trip to the twin waterfalls at Anna Ruby Falls, shopping at the city’s some 200 unique shops or an evening of miniature golf at Alpine Mini Golf Village.
“Our town started as a home to the Cherokee, and then to European settlers who came for the gold and the timber,” the official city website states. “Today, people come for our Blue Ridge Mountain setting and the Southeast’s finest Bavarian Village for a glimpse of Germany, right here in Georgia.”

Helen has also been home to the popular German music, food and drink festival, Oktoberfest, for 48 years.
Visitors often stop at the Chattahoochee outpost to purchase tickets and tubes to shoot the ‘hooch. Strapped in life-jackets, adventurers can journey down the river for an hour, two hours or all day.
Due to flash flooding, the popular Cool River Tubing attraction may be closed this weekend.
