A pair of thieves rigged a gate system and entered a secured parking deck to break into nearly a dozen cars in Inman Park, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Atlanta police told Channel 2 that the reports started rolling in Friday morning.

"It's an absolute violation," said one victim Joel Perkel.

He said he immediately noticed broken glass and an iPod missing from his car. He said he was parked on the roof of the secured parking garage at the Mariposa Lofts on Montag Circle.

Ten other residents found their windows smashed out and electronics missing, according to Channel 2.

Officer Ari Bleifeld with Atlanta Police Department and Inman Park Neighborhood Patrol said two thieves managed to manipulate the electrical box that controls the gate to the parking deck.

"They were able to bypass a part of the system that allowed them to gain access to the garage through one of the exit gates," Bleifeld told Channel 2.

Police said one suspect smashed glass while the other worked as a lookout.

"To steal a car maybe they would do something like that, but to break into a bunch of people's cars and hope that there's something of value in there, it's a little ridiculous," Perkel said.

Investigators said surveillance cameras were able to capture video of the thieves in action.

They said they were working several leads and trying to determine if these crimes are linked to a rash of break-ins in Buckhead.

While they're working to make arrests, they said the public can take steps to avoid becoming a target.

"It's very important to keep your car clean and don't give anyone the opportunity to think that there's anything in your car," Bleifeld said.
