A teenager driving on a restricted license and her mother both face charges in a fatal crash that killed a Fulton County teacher and injured two others, police said Tuesday.
The 41-year-old middle school teacher, Shireen Haynes, died Monday afternoon when the car she was traveling in collided with a tractor-trailer on Camp Creek Parkway in south Fulton County, Detective Melissa Parker with Fulton County police said Tuesday.
Haynes worked as a math teacher at nearby Sandtown Middle School, according to the school's website.
Another Sandtown teacher, Kay Price, and her husband, James Price, were hospitalized in stable condition Tuesday after being injured in the wreck, which happened around 4:15 p.m. near the intersection with Campbellton Road, police said.
Investigators believe James Price picked up both women after school, and the three were in the same vehicle, a Saturn, at the time of the wreck, Parker said.
The Saturn collided with another car and was pushed into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer, police told Channel 2 Action News late Monday.
Investigators believe the vehicle that caused the wreck was driven by a teenager, whose mother told her to drive the car and she would follow behind, Parker said.
The juvenile, whose name was not released, will be charged with failure to maintain lane, driving on a restricted license and suspended registration, Parker said. The mother, whose name also was not released, faces a charge of allowing an unauthorized driver to operate a vehicle.
Charges for both the teen and her mother could be upgraded to vehicular homicide, Parker said.
Wreck investigators plan to speak to the district attorney about the charges Wednesday, she said.
