An 18-year-old voluntarily issued a statement about his possible involvement in a hit-and-run boating accident late Friday on Lake Lanier that sent two people to the hospital.

A spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources said the teen, in the company of his father, went to the Hall County Detention Center to issue a statement after the father heard about the hit-and-run on the radio and noticed damage to his boat. The son admitted hitting something but said he did not see or hear anything, DNR spokeswoman Melissa Cummings said Sunday.

The victims were in a Sea-Doo jet boat that was heavily damaged in the accident. Both victims, whose names were not released, were in stable condition at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, according to the DNR.

The Sea-Doo was running its lights under the bright moon, and was either idling or moving slowly, police said. The totaled boat bore yellow and white “transfer marks” from impact with the other boat, which “ran over” it, police said.

Cummings said the 18-year-old was injured with minor cuts to his arm and proceeded to a boat ramp and left the lake after the incident because his boat was taking on water.

DNR said Monday that the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed.

The 18-year-old’s name has not been released.
