The conversion of Tech Parkway in Midtown from a busy, four-lane thoroughfare to a two-lane street with dedicated paths for bicycles and pedestrians entered its latest phase this month with the permanent closure of the southbound side of the street.

The PATH Foundation, working with the city of Atlanta and Georgia Tech, reported the closure in its September online newsletter. PATH and Tech are splitting the project's cost 50-50.

Tech Parkway runs through the Tech campus. Work began in May to reconfigure the street from Northside Drive to North Avenue. When completed early next year, a two-way bike path and a separate path for walkers and joggers will go where the southbound lanes once ran, and two-way vehicular traffic will use the former northbound lanes.

The bike path is to continue across North Avenue along Luckie Street to the planned Bike Depot at Centennial Olympic Park.
