New item-Alpharetta

Marlow Skinner wants help with a busy intersection.

“I would like your assistance correcting what I believe to be a huge DOT mistake in the right turn lane at the intersection of westbound Mansell Road at Westside Parkway.

“A few years back, when the Westside Parkway bridge was widened, the previous westbound-to-northbound turn lane from Mansell Road onto Westside Parkway was cut into two separate (and MUCH shorter) turn lanes - one into the PNC bank and Volkswagen, and the other onto Westside Parkway. When that was done, a raised curb was put in approximately the mid point of the original turn lane had been,” she wrote.

Skinner said the curb is difficult to see due to a rise in the road, impossible to see at night, and is so close to the corner that people believe the first turn lane is (and really should be) the turn lane onto Westside Parkway as it was before.

“The offending curb is chipped and nicked where car after car have pulled into the turn lane only to run into and over this raised curb, resulting in flat tires, bent rims and broken suspensions. At the very least, the raised curb could be removed and paved flat with a gore painted to delineate the business entrances from the corner. At least cars would not hit the curb and destroy their suspension or swerve back into traffic,” she added.

We sent the issue to Alpharetta and got a quick response.

“I have spoken with our Director of Public Works to see if there are any plans relative to the Mansell Road / Westside Parkway intersection in the near future. He indicated that there are plans to make improvements to the intersection and that those plans will result in the removal of the bulb out. We anticipate construction on those improvements to begin in calendar year 2016,” wrote assistant city administrator James Drinkard.

New item-I-20

Robert McCown wants something done about a series of potholes.

“The potholes on I-20 at I-285 coming in from the west and entering I-285 have been a constant problem for the past three years. They are so bad now, I have broken two windshields in the past month from rocks flying out of them. This has been and continues to be a real costly and safety problem. Past attempts by the DOT last less than a week,” he wrote.

We sent the item to DOT and will keep you updated.
