SWAT standoff ends in SE Atlanta
A SWAT incident Monday afternoon ended without incident, when police arrested eight young men squatting in a southeast Atlanta apartment with an assault rifle and drugs, police said.
Around 4 p.m., police were called to an apartment complex in the 200 block of Maynard Terrace to investigate illegal tenants, Atlanta police spokesman Sgt. Curtis Davenport said.
"The officers who arrived on the scene saw eight young black males at the apartment, who immediately retreated into the apartment when they saw police," Davenport said.
Officers reported seeing an assault rifle, and immediately called for a SWAT team, Davenport said.
In the time it took SWAT to arrive on the scene, five men surrendered to police.
"Four walked out the front door, and one jumped out a window," Davenport said.
SWAT went into the apartment and arrested the remaining three individuals, finding "a significant amount of marijuana" and confiscating the assault rifle officers initially saw, Davenport said.
Davenport said the eight men arrested were from between 17 years old and the late 20s, and will likely be charged for burglary, firearm and drug possession.
The investigation is ongoing.
