A SWAT standoff at a DeKalb County apartment complex came to a peaceful end late Wednesday morning when an armed man came out of his apartment and surrendered to police.

The incident began overnight when a courtesy officer at the Westchester at Clairmont complex off I-85 near Clairmont Road tried to do a "welfare check" on a resident, DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish told the AJC.

Parish said that family members of the resident, who has a history of mental illness, had become concerned and asked for the welfare check.

Getting no response to the door, the courtesy officer forced his way into the apartment, and was met by the resident, who was armed, according to Parish.

She said the courtesy officer backed out of the apartment and the DeKalb police SWAT team was called to the scene about 4:30 a.m.

After about six hours of negotiations, the man, who was alone inside the apartment, "came out peacefully," Parish said. The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to a local hospital for a mental evaluation, she said.
