Five students walking home from Henderson Middle School Monday were hit by an SUV that jumped the curb, but all are expected to be O.K., DeKalb County Police said.

The accident happened about 4:30 p.m. at Henderson Mill Road and Mercer University Drive.

One student was initially thought to be in critical condition, but police now describe that student’s injuries as “moderate.” Two students were taken to the hospital for observation, and two were taken as a precaution.

All the students are 13 or 14 years old.

The 64-year-old driver of the Ford Explorer told police she was distracted and pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. She was cited for failure to maintain her lane and driving on the wrong side of the road.
