An SUV carrying three people crashed through a guardrail and fell about 50 feet off the side of the Martin Luther King Jr. Drive bridge in downtown Atlanta on Wednesday, police said.

The incident happened around 6 p.m. on the overpass between Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Spring Street, Atlanta police spokesman Officer John Chafee said.

The black Jeep Liberty was traveling eastbound on MLK Drive when the driver experienced a medical emergency, according to the preliminary investigation. The vehicle turned to the left, crashed through the guardrail and fell from the bridge.

All three people in the vehicle were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition with minor injuries, Chafee said. The front passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Atlanta Fire Department.

“It was quite a drop and there was substantial damage to the vehicle,” Chafee said.

The driver was cited for being unlicensed, police said.

No other charges have been filed at this time.
