A 21-year-old man is facing aggravated assault on a peace officer charges after an attempted Waffle House robbery turned into a deadly standoff Sunday morning.

Demarques Williams and 27-year-old Dustin Charles Fant allegedly tried to rob the Waffle House near the intersection of Evans Mill Road and Mall Parkway in DeKalb County, the GBI said Monday.

After the alleged robbery attempt, the men fled to a nearby convenience store at Snapfinger Woods Drive and Shell Bark Road, where gunfire erupted, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.

At least one of the suspects and police exchanged gunfire before Fant was discovered dead. An autopsy is being conducted to determine Fant’s manner of death, the GBI said Monday.

Police on Sunday did not know whether Fant shot himself.
