Suspect dies after being shot during attempted bank robbery

Dec 28, 2012

A suspect was fatally shot late Friday morning during an attempted robbery at a DeKalb County bank.

The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. at the Capitol City Bank & Trust Company in the 5600 block of Memorial Drive.

Eric D. Roberts, 30, was trying to rob the bank when a plainclothes investigator, who was there on personal business, identified himself as a deputy and ordered the suspect to drop his gun, according to DeKalb sheriff’s spokesman Adrion Bell. When Roberts refused, the officer shot him.

Roberts broke a window and jumped out of it, making it to the drive-through banking area before collapsing, Bell said. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

The officer, whose name is not being released, will be placed on a routine paid leave for evaluations and will return to work when he is administratively cleared, Bell said.

Meanwhile, Gwinnett County police are investigating the Friday morning robbery of a Wells Fargo branch on U.S. 29.

According to Gwinnett police, two masked men came into the bank with guns and demanded money.

Officers chased the suspects as they made their getaway, but they jumped out of their car and fled on foot into woods.

Police recovered the stolen money and the guns used in the robbery.
