A long-range planning study of Fayette County demographics aims to predict school enrollment trends for the next 10-20 years.

The study was conducted by Education Planners and presented to the Board of Education on Nov. 26. Using 12 sources of data, the report focused on what Fayette can reasonably expect regarding population changes and growth. It forecast a net increase of more than 32,000 residents and 23,000 jobs by 2040, and a 6 percent increase in school-age children within 10 years. Although the average age of Fayette residents continues to rise, the report says the county has a higher-than-average retention rate of children born there still residing there when entering elementary school.

The school system will revisit the projections in three to five years to assess their accuracy.
