Stockbridge officials were united Feb. 5 on the front steps of City Hall in their opposition to legislation now in the General Assembly that could strip the city of about 50 percent of its existing land for the formation of a new city known at Eagles Landing.

Several speakers, including legislators opposed to the measure, pointed out that no city has ever been formed in Georgia by taking land from an existing city. Officials also criticized the fact that, if passed, the legislation would call for a referendum but only allow those in the affected areas to vote rather than all voters in the city.

Council members said the move would lower considerably the level at which city services are provided and force a property tax increase for those left in Stockbridge.
