The Stockbridge City Council reached a consensus recently to direct the city’s staff to take the first steps to demolish the Multiplex building owned by the city. There will be an eye toward future construction of a new community center.

An assessment by an engineering firm indicated that it would cost just over $1.5 million to make necessary repairs and complete the buildout of the current structure, which is about 25 years old and was acquired by the city in 2013. A new building of similar size would likely cost in the neighborhood of $3 million in addition to demolition and design costs, but with warranties and without some of the maintenance the older building would require, city manager Michael Harris reported at the council meeting.

The most recent occupant of the building has been Academy Theatre.
