After a slow start, early voting picked up during the second week heading into the Tuesday, July 14, runoff election for the unexpired term in Georgia House District 24.

Forsyth County elections officials said that, while just 362 people cast advance/early votes the first week of balloting, nearly 1,300 votes were cast the second week for a total of 1,661.

Tuesday’s vote will pit Republicans Sheri Gilligan and David Van Sant against each other. They were the two top vote-getters in the June 16 special election to fill the unexpired term of State Rep. Mark Hamilton, who resigned. Voters in Cumming and several north and west Forsyth precincts will cast ballots.

The winner will serve the final 18 months of Hamilton’s term.
