A soldier from west Georgia was killed over the weekend in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced on Tuesday.

Staff Sgt. Cynthia R. Taylor, 39, of Columbus, was one of five soldiers killed at Forward Operating Base Gamberi in Nangarhar province when an Afghan National Army soldier attacked them with multiple grenades, according to the Department of Defense.

Taylor, who died on Saturday, was assigned to the 101st Special Troops Battalion, 101st Sustainment Brigade, 101st Airborne Division based at Fort Campbell, Ky.

Taylor joined the Army in 2003. She had received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart, among other medals. She is survived by a daughter and a son.

Also killed in the attack were Capt. Charles E. Ridgley Jr., 40, of Baltimore, Sgt. 1st Class Charles L. Adkins of Sandusky, Ohio, Sgt. Linda L. Pierre, 28, of Immokalee, Fla., and Spc. Joseph B. Cemper, 21, of Warrensburg, Mo.
