A Smyrna man has been charged with statutory rape and other charges for having sex with a 12-year-old runaway, authorities said.

Ignacio Avaloz was charged Thursday with felony child molestation, statutory rape and interference with custody for taking the young girl to a Mableton motel and having sex with her, authorities said.

Cobb County police arrested Avaloz, 20, early Thursday morning in Marietta.

According to arrest records, Avaloz picked up the girl sometime Tuesday evening, knowing she had run away from her mother's house. It is unclear whether Avaloz knew the girl.

He checked into the America's Best Value Inn and Suites at 6089 Mableton Parkway, where the crimes are alleged to have occurred sometime between Tuesday night and late Wednesday morning, arrest records show.

Avaloz is being held without bond at the Cobb County Jail, according to jail records.
