The Smyrna City Council will hear two appeals 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Council Chambers, City Hall, 2800 King St. on variances for a new fireworks store.

Owner David Beattie of TNT Stores at 2781 South Cobb Drive is requesting a wall sign on the roof that would be 99 square feet instead of 40 square feet.

These requests were denied by the city’s License and Variance Board on Jan. 13.

Beattie said his company plans to spend $400,000 to retrofit the former Piccadilly Cafeteria that has been vacant for several years and once had a rooftop sign.

Beattie added that he wouldn’t have chosen the location if he’d known of the city’s strict sign ordinance. He said he hasn’t encountered similar restrictions elsewhere.
