Smyrna will be on its way to replacing Fire Station 2, its oldest station, with a groundbreaking ceremony on Sept. 11, following the city’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony.

The groundbreaking will take place around 9:45 a.m. at 642 Concord Road, Smyrna while the 9/11 Memorial Ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the 20th Century Veterans Memorial, Village Green, 2800 King St., next to City Hall.

In April, the Smyrna City Council awarded the construction contract to the lowest bidder, BM&K Construction Inc., for $2.7 million from 2016 SPLOST funding. The new building will have a full-size pull through with a driveway for the equipment.

Upgrades also will include male and female restrooms and a day room.
