The Smyrna City Council denied two appeals on variances for a new fireworks store.

TNT Fireworks, one of the largest fireworks store companies in the world, wants to open at 2781 South Cobb Drive in the former Piccadilly Cafeteria on a seasonal basis and requested a sign on the roof that would be 99 square feet instead of 40 square feet.

Council denied the requests with a 5-2 vote on Monday. These requests also were denied by the city’s License and Variance Board on Jan. 13.

The company said it plans to spend at least $500,000 to retrofit the building that has been vacant for several years and once had a rooftop sign for Piccadilly.
