Smog alert in effect through Tuesday

Look, up in the air. It's a ... ah, who can tell.

A thick layer of heat-infused smog has once again settled over the city -- the third straight day metro Atlanta has fallen under a Code Orange alert. It remains in effect through Tuesday. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division issued the alert, which warns that the air is likely to be unhealthy for some people -- especially children, many of whom returned to school today from their summer break.

People sensitive to ozone and those with heart or lung disease are advised to limit prolonged outdoor exertion during late afternoon and early evening hours when ozone concentrations are highest.

The dog days show no signs of ending soon, with high temperatures settling into the mid-90s through the weekend, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist David Chandley.
