Employees of a Midtown liquor store were cleaning up a big mess Wednesday morning after thieves smashed a stolen vehicle through the front of the store.

The smash-and-grab burglary happened about 4:30 a.m. at Mac’s Beer and Wine on Peachtree Place at West Peachtree Street. Two hours later, employees were busy removing chunks of brick, concrete blocks, glass and metal door frames from the entrance to the store.

Owner Mac Thurston told the AJC that the thieves drove a stolen sport utility vehicle through the huge glass doors of the store, and when the SUV got stuck in the side of the building, stole a van from the neighborhood to make their getaway.

Thurston said he didn’t yet know what was taken in the burglary.

“We’re sorting it out,” he said, adding the value of whatever was taken would pale in comparison to the amount of damage done to the building.
