An apparently homeless man who was asleep in a parking lot in downtown Atlanta had a close call Monday afternoon when a motorist who didn't see him drove his pickup truck into him, Channel 2 Action News reports.

The incident occurred in the lot at Peachtree and Trinity streets. The truck apparently dragged the victim, pinning him underneath.

"We didn't know if he was dead or alive. He was just lying there,” Battalion Chief Todd Edwards of Atlanta Fire and Rescue told Channel 2. “His entire body was underneath the truck. The only thing visible upon our arrival was his feet."

Rescuers used air bags and lift jacks to lift the vehicle off the man, then rushed him to Grady Memorial Hospital. Witnesses described him as about 50 years old. His name was not immediately available.

Authorities said the man sustained serious injuries but was expected to survive.
