We asked Channel 2 Action News This Morning's meteorologist Karen Minton why we had this dramatic sunset last night. She told use, "Colors in the sky are due to the rays of the sunlight being split into colors of the Spectrum as they pass through the atmosphere and bounce off of the water vapor and other particles in the atmosphere. The sky is normally blue because the sky scatters blue light more than any other color(short wavelength). At sunset, the light from the sun has to travel a lot further through the atmosphere because it’s at an angle (more than twice as much). So the blue light gets scattered before it gets to us, leaving the other end of the spectrum which is red; red colors have a longer wavelength."
