A sheriff was taken to a hospital after he got into a car wreck about 1:40 p.m. Monday in Monroe, police said.

Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman was traveling along Gratis Road near Meadow Walk Drive when a car driven by Nathifa Smith failed to yield at a stop sign, Department of Public Safety spokesman Capt. Mark Perry said.

Chapman’s Ford Expedition slammed into the left side of Smith’s Chevrolet Malibu.

The sheriff’s car spun counterclockwise and began overturning before coming to a stop on its left side, Perry said. Smith’s car rotated clockwise and eventually stopped on Gratis Road.

Smith was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, Perry said. Chapman was taken to Athens Regional Hospital with moderate injuries.

No alcohol was involved, Perry said.

The crash is being investigated.
