A sewer main break caused headaches in north Fulton County on Monday.
For much of the day, the intersection of Hammond Drive and Roswell Road in Sandy Springs was closed to what a spokesperson from Atlanta Watershed called a 12-inch main rupture. Crews from Fulton County worked all afternoon, and the intersection was reopened.
But as of 5:30 p.m. on Monday those crews were still working, and what remains closed is a section of Hammond Drive between Boylston Drive and Roswell Road. A lane is open for westbound traffic, but all eastbound lanes remain closed.
The break was first reported at 9:41 a.m. and water could be seen bubbling up through the road. Initially, crews weren't sure if it was a water main or a sewer main that broke, but officials with the City of Sandy Springs confirmed that it is a sewer main break.
Crews from Fulton County capped the leak and got to work.
Luckily for surrounding homes and businesses, crews were able to work without shutting off water. Around 4 p.m. crews were using jackhammers and other equipment to crack into the road.
Officials from Atlanta Watershed, Sandy Springs and Fulton County have not said what caused the main to break.
The closure will remain in place overnight and into Tuesday morning, city officials said. Traffic signals have been modified to help with congestion, but city officials urge drivers to use alternate routes.
